Inspired by the landscape around Glen Sannox on the Isle of Arran, Coastal Ferns & Foxgloves captures the ferns and wild foxgloves growing along this rugged stretch of the Scottish coast. I was drawn to the contrast between the softness and colour of the planting and the wilder coastal landscape surrounding it.
The layers of foliage and flowers create a rich foreground, while glimpses of the landscape beyond give the painting a sense of depth and place. It captures something I particularly love about Arran – the way wild planting, mountains and coast come together within such a dramatic landscape.
