Inspired by the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardens, this painting captures the extraordinary variety of tropical plants and cacti growing within the glasshouse. I was drawn to the abundance of different forms, from architectural leaves and spines to the softer shapes of the surrounding foliage.
The large scale of the painting allowed me to explore the layers of planting in detail, building a sense of depth and immersion across the canvas. The contrasts in shape, colour and texture reflect the experience of being surrounded by the remarkable collection of plants within the conservatory.
