Inspired by the rugged coastline of the Isle of Arran, Isle of Arran Coastal captures the meeting point between land and sea, with coastal grasses and scrub leading towards rocks and breaking waves. I was drawn to the changing colours and textures of the shoreline and the contrast between the softer planting in the foreground and the movement of the sea beyond.
Painted using palette knives and layers of acrylic, the surface is built up with individual marks that create texture and movement throughout the landscape. The soft blues, greens and natural tones reflect the distinctive light and atmosphere of Arran's coast and the feeling of being beside the sea.
