Sunflower painting

Written by Susan Bell

With the Chelsea Flower Show fast approaching my paint brush is speeding up to the point where I have just worn down the bristles on yet another paint brush as well as having just snapped it in mid painting!

To the people who ask what instrument I use to apply the dots to my paintings this paint brush tells the whole story.

I thought for my first ever blog that I would show the painting I have just finished in its different stages from start to finish (well hopefully finished as annoyingly I am never quite sure if something will niggle me into adding more later on).

This painting is taken from a row of sunflowers in a walled garden at Kellie Castle in Fife when we were visiting the area on a family holiday.

I take hundreds of photographs wherever I am to add to my library of images that I can come back to at a later date. As the pointillist technique I use is time consuming I would not be able to paint on site as I would need to set up camp, so I take photographs from various angles as well as close ups to use for reference when I am back in my studio.

I have been out today photographing some of the wonderful blossom trees for my next painting so will keep you posted.
